Nebraska Warbirds 14uAA and Midwest Selects 09 Tryouts

The Fremont Flyers Hockey Program is excited to announce tryouts for our Nebraska Warbird Bantam AA team and the Midwest Selects ’09 Elite Team.

Tryouts for both of these teams will be held on July 23 at 5 pm and July 24 at 10:15 am at Moylan Ice Plex in Omaha.

Nebraska Warbirds Hockey-

The Nebraska Warbirds will be taking the ice for the third season under the Fremont Flyers program and will be competing at top tournaments across the Midwest and competing at the AA Level.  Additionally, the Warbirds will participate in about 10 tournaments this season.  Players with ’09 and ’08 birth years are eligible to try out for this team.

Midwest Select Hockey-

The Warbirds staff is working with other associations in the Midwest to build Select AAA Level teams for the OneHockey World Tournament that will be hosted in Omaha October 21-23 in both the 08 and 09 Division.  Midwest Select Hockey will feature a blend of the top 09 players from across the Midwest to play in the OneWorld Hockey Tournament as well as the Tier 1 AAA Chicago and Tier 1 AAA Colorado tournaments.

A Midwest Select AAA ’08 team will also be fielded to play in the OneHockey World Tournament in Omaha.  “08s are eligible to be evaluated at this tryout or the Fremont Flyers Bantam Travel tryout that will be held Aug 6 @ 11:45 and the 7th at 11:30 am at Moylan.

Both Nebraska Warbirds Hockey and the Midwest Select ’09 Teams will be coached by returning Warbirds Coaches, Jeff Hoggan, and Jake Ortmeyer.  Both coaches have done a fantastic job over the years of developing top players in our region and preparing them for the next level.

Jeff Hoggan, Head Coach

Coach Jeff Hoggan began his hockey-playing career in Hope,  British Columbia, Canada at an early age. He was recruited to play in Omaha for the UNO Mavericks from 1998 through  2002 and was one of the few All-American award recipients to play for the Mavericks and ultimately the first player from UNO to play in the NHL.

 

Jeff went on to play in over 100 NHL games for St. Louis Blues, Boston Bruins and the Phoenix Coyotes. During his over

15 years of professional hockey  from 2002-2017, Jeff was in a Captaincy role for 5 different NHL organizations, mentoring top NHL prospects toward their dream of playing at the highest level. His leadership experience includes guiding notable players such as Kyle Turris, Michael Boedker, Phil Kessel and David Krecji. As Captain of the 2013 AHL Champion Grand Rapids Griffins, he led many future Detroit Red Wings, such as Tomas Tatar,  Tyler Bertuzzi and Gustav Nypuist.

 

He is a two-time Calder Cup Champion, selected as Captain for the 2016 AHL All-Star Game and in 2015 received the AHL Fred T. Hunt Memorial Trophy for player best exemplifying sportsmanship, determination and dedication to hockey. He was further inducted into the Omaha Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018.

Jake Ortmeyer, Assistant

Coach Jake Ortmeyer also holds an extensive hockey career and has become known as Omaha's Golden Coach. Along with his brother  Jed, the Ortmeyer brothers are the most recognizable homegrown hockey names and success stories to come out of Omaha, Nebraska. Jake went through the local youth programs playing for the Omaha Lancers. He later received a scholarship to Miami University where he played from 1998-2002. Advancing from college, he played a solid professional career for the ECHL, AHL, and CHL from 2003-2008.

 

Upon returning to his hometown, Jake immediately began giving back to local youth programs by sharing his knowledge and experience in the game from his years of professional experience. He has coached AAA hockey for 12 years and 22 years and counting in coaching and player development.
