Eleven Fremont Flyers girls from five different Fremont teams came together for an historic day at Sidner Ice Arena, Sunday, Jan. 22.

The Flyers had 11-year-olds, Penelope Phelps and Lennon Helget; 10-year-olds Audrey Krusic and Bristol Pauletto; 9-year-olds Malin Creason and Brynlee Kerkman; 8-year-olds Ella Ondracek, Briar Buzzell and Kinsley Quick; and 7-year-olds Tyler Bird and Rorey Molitor.

The team was the first-ever all-girls rostered team in Fremont history. Thanks to the Omaha Lady Lancers 10U team, who had played a game earlier in the day, the team was able to make history by participating in the first-ever official game on Sunday, Jan. 22.

But even though just getting on the ice was a win, the girls played hard enough to get a chance to win a game on the scoreboard as well. After getting down 2-0 early, Audrey Krusic, who has played on Fremont Flyers 10U Select team the last two seasons, scored the first-ever goal in Fremont Flyers girl history. She added another goal later, along with a pair from Penny Phelps in a game the Flyers girls never led until…

With just over two minutes left the Flyers called a timeout. Shortly after that timeout and a whistle, Lennon Helget gathered the puck and raced in to score the go-ahead goal to make it 5-4. The next minute and a half featured a frantic affair including a big save by goaltender Kinsley Quick who had taken a puck to the knee on an earlier save, but fought through it to finish the game.

Despite the win, the game was more about coming together to promote the girls game. Alumni and brothers and sisters from older teams all watched the game. With more than 20 girls players in 10U in the area and more coming up the ranks in 8U girls hockey, it appears to be growing at a rapid rate.

The Fremont Flyers and Omaha Lady Lancers continue to be partners in the advancement of the game. Several former Fremont Flyers now play for Lady Lancers teams of different levels.
