Sunday, Oct. 20, marked the beginning of a new relationship for Fremont Ice Association and Omaha’s Tier 1 Junior A USA Hockey team, the Omaha Lancers.
Goaltending coach Matt Beck and his team collaborated with Fremont Flyers board, led by Greg Evert and goaltending parents to establish goaltending-specific ice and time to develop and enhance goaltending skill sets that can be difficult to do in team practice environments.
“Our association recognizes the importance of specific instruction of goaltenders and their unique needs,” said Association President Warren Peters. “This is a direct-result of working with parents who identified a need and stepped up to volunteer and work to find Matt the right solution for their players.
We’re also doing this in a variety of areas with our older players and power skating, as well as having our Squirt players practice with some of our top coaches who have played junior, college and professional hockey. We are truly blessed to have these resources for such a small association.”
The association has a goaltending group where everyone knows everyone and older goalies can mentor younger goalies throughout the year.
“Being a smaller association we are able to hone in on individual players and work on their strengths and weaknesses,” said House Director Jason Buzzell. “This is the Fremont difference having top-notch instruction to all level goaltenders. Kudos to Greg (Evert) and thanks to the Lancers.”
The collaboration will continue throughout the 24-25 season to Fremont Flyers goalies.
