Sidner Hosting Select North Weekend

The equivalent of hosting a class of a High School State Tournament will arrive in Fremont for games over a three-day period.

Sidner Ice Arena will host 10 out-of-town teams from Omaha, Lincoln and Kearney, Nebraska as well as Kansas City and Davenport, Iowa.

The weekend features the first regular season games for the Select division of the Midwest Amateur Hockey Association. This features the top teams at each level from smaller associations such as Wichita and Kearney, and B/Select teams from associations like Fremont (Davenport, Lincoln, Omaha and Kansas City).

A full opening of new areas of the arena for the weekend makes the hosting, even more exciting.

This season marks one of the first for Fremont to have competitive teams at all three levels (10U, 12U and 14U), including two house teams at 10U and 12U. At the 14U level, due to High School hockey and other pressures on numbers, it is difficult to field more than one additional team. The association has more than 200 players and around 30-35 at each age group vs. just 20-25 at squirts and peewees just a few years ago. A 40 percent increase.

Despite that increase, some neighboring associations have 150-200 players per age group and can field 10 or more teams to Fremont's two or three. But the small size gives players a chance to play Select weekends like this, and push themselves at a higher level.

Games begin Dec. 13 around noon and wrap up Sunday afternoon. The teams will then play again Jan. 10-12 (Fremont will host another "crossover" weekend at Bantam 14U), and then play co-host with Omaha for the Squirt (10U) League Championship Jan. 24-26 where even more teams will descend on Fremont and area.
