The Peewee Silver (Select) 12Us captured the Des Moines New Year's Eve Puck Drop going 4-0 Dec. 27-29 in Des Moines, Iowa.
The team, which went 3-1 in league play (Dec. 13-15) before competing at the Omaha Winter Class "B" Event (Dec. 20-22) rebounded in a big way Dec. 27-29 going undefeated in pool play, which included a huge 3-2 win over league-rival Wichita Saturday night to put them into the final.
Following wins over Des Moines Navy and Meramec (St. Louis), the Flyers took on Wichita's Travel team and got down 2-1 midway through the first period. Kai Pope notched a powerplay goal from Beau Behrens and Charlie Patera to tie it 2-2 heading into the first intermission. Harlon Mellon would then score the eventual game winner halfway through the second, from defenseman Elliot Lhreux and goalie Zane Eklund would shut the door the rest of the way for the win.
Then, in the championship final, the team got down 2-1 again midway through the first period before exploding for six unanswered goals against Des Moines Grey, who was also undefeated heading into the game, for the championship win.
The team finished its 2024 segment of the season 7-8 and will be back in action Jan. 10-12 for the crossover weekend of Midwest Hockey League along with Squirt Silver before league finals Jan. 24-26. They will also head to Fort Collins Presidents Day Weekend and finish the season at the Omaha Stampede.
All of Silver's players also compete either on Fremont Black or White, which will play league games throughout January and February, as well as in the Omaha Joust Feb. 22-24.
