The Fremont Ice Association officially turned 20 years old on Tuesday, Oct. 28. The peewee travel team and bantam select teams celebrated by playing a highly entertaining and competitive game that ultimately ended in a 2-2 tie.
Before the game, Fremont Flyer alum Parker McInroy dropped a ceremonial puck for Fremont's Braxton Knop (Fremont Middle School) of the Flyers and Easton Bird (Trinity Lutheran School) of the Warbirds.
McInroy began skating at Sidner Ice Arena in 2008 and played Varsity hockey in Fremont before going to play 18UAAA with the Colorado Springs Tigers. He then played the last two seasons with Mason City in the NA3HL before joining the Midland University Warriors this year.
Jacob Kasun got the scoring going early for the Flyers, streaking in on a wrist shot to make it 1-0. Long-time Flyer Audrey Krusic then made it 2-0 right away in the second period on a nice feed from Kasun.
The Warbirds battled back as Forge Hickman would deflect a Gage Baxter shot to get within one before the second period intermission. Baxter would then tie the game mid-way through the third on a rebound, but neither team could muster the game winner thus ending the game in a 2-2 tie.
Fremont Flyers teams have now been playing for more than 15 years under the Fremont Ice Association, which was established in 2005 to "to foster amateur ice skating activities and competition." The program began having teams and won its first game in November 2008.
