Travel vs. Select vs. House (What does it all mean?)

10U, 12U and 14U Program Definitions

We know it gets a little confusing with all the labels thrown around in youth sports. We've put some summaries below of what Travel vs. House and Select means in Fremont.

We feel strongly those who do not play on one of our "travel" teams, get more ice time, more puck touches, and develop leadership qualities by playing as part of our House/Select program. All players who do not make a Travel or top representative team, play house games and are eligible to be selected to the Select team for additional games and practices. Below, we have a broad overview of each program type. More details can also be found in the annual Flyer parent handbook.

Travel (Gold/A/B1)

Composition of Teams

Travel hockey teams in Fremont are considered our top team in each division. They are “representative” teams in the Midwest Hockey League and typically compete at the B1/A level with some AA games as well. Try outs take place for these teams, and players who do not make the team, but have potential, are asked to sign up for interest in our Select program.

Budgets and Costs

Travel team budgets include about 5-6 tournaments, league fees and a schedule of around 40-45 games. Coaches manage the team budgets with board advisory.

Estimated 2024-25 per player cost: $2,850 (includes jerseys/socks, track suits, and bags for new players)

Sponsorships

Travel teams are encouraged to fundraise either through team fundraising efforts or team sponsorships. It is important sponsorships fund equipment needs and reducing the overall fees to participate in hockey. Fundraising should not be done to add tournaments or additional games. Exceptions are made when Travel teams qualify for a national tournament (ie: Silver Sticks A/AA, USA Nationals, etc…). Board members should be advised of efforts that would cover additional costs above the thresholds noted above for Travel teams

Schedules

Travel Teams practice at least twice per week as a team. The focus is on skill development but also beginning advanced concepts of teamwork and intermediate concepts of hockey systems.

Team Manager Duties

Travel Managers are integral members of the coaching staff and the Fremont Ice Association. They assist with purchases and adhere to budgets set by the board treasurer prior to the season. They act as a go-to for parents between the coaching staff for all questions/concerns.

House Select (Silver/B2/C)

Composition of Teams

Select hockey teams in Fremont are comprised of the top players in our house/local league teams. The teams compete in the Midwest Hockey League’s Select division, which includes three weekends of league play (usually one at home or in Omaha).

The players also compete on their local house league teams. Additional Omaha tournaments and one or two others that do NOT conflict with league schedule are usually scheduled either at the beginning, end, or midpoints of the season on off weekends only. There are no try outs, but a selection process that takes place with coaches in the association over the first two weeks of practices.

Budgets and Costs

Select budgets usually are set May 1 to cover Midwest Hockey League fees and a schedule of around 20-25 games, in addition to their house games. The board's treasurer manages Select budgets with Coach input.

2024-25 per player cost: $1,900 (includes registration and house fees of $950)

Schedules

Select Teams practice once per week as a team. This is in addition to their house practice. The focus is on skill development and basic concepts of hockey systems. League play is a priority over attending more tournaments.

Team Manager Duties

Select Team Manager duties include being an advocate of the Board and assisting with adherence to handbook policies as well as league protocols. Select Managers should always take direction from the Select coach and the Board Treasurer on budget and tournament selection.

House (Black/White)

Composition of Teams

Our house teams welcome everyone to the game of hockey. There are no evaluations. Players must play in their age group and as long as it is deemed safe and appropriate, can compete on house teams.

Note: Depending on numbers our house team at the older levels (peewee and bantam) may also play parts of a "Select" schedule. Ie: If a Peewee team has only 13-15 house players registered.

Budgets and Costs

House teams are managed and run out of the association. House fees  are set to cover one house practice a week,  one game a week in the Omaha House League plus at least one jersey and pair of socks. The costs cover about 18-20 games including house tournaments (2-3).

2024-25 Per player cost: $950

Schedules

House Teams practice once per week with a primary focus on skill development using the concepts of USA Hockey’s ADM Model for maximum puck touches, skating instruction and fun.

Team Manager Duties

House teams do not have a team manager. A board member from the Fremont Ice Association acts as House Director for scheduling purposes and coaches/parent questions.

We do, however, need volunteers for Locker Room monitors and to help with scoreclocks, gamesheet and penalty boxes during games. Let the House Director know if you can assist!
